Cornfield Herbicide – Bicyclopyrone

Bicyclopyrone is the third triketone herbicide successfully launched by Syngenta after sulcotrione and mesotrione, and it is an HPPD inhibitor, which is the fastest growing product in this class of herbicides in recent years. It is mainly used for corn, sugar beet, cereals (such as wheat, barley) and other crops to control broad-leaved weeds and some grass weeds, and has a high control effect on large-seeded broad-leaved weeds such as trilobite ragweed and cocklebur. Good control effect on glyphosate-resistant weeds.

Combine Formulation

Bicyclopyrone can be compounded with various herbicides such as Mesotrione, Isoxaflutole, Topramezone, and Tembotrione. By mixing with the safeners benoxacor or cloquintocet, Bicyclopyrone can improve the safety to crops. The selective herbicide variety has good activity against broadleaf weeds and perennial and annual weeds, and can be used in corn, wheat, barley, sugarcane and other crop fields.

Although Bicyclopyrone has been on the market soon, its patent application is earlier, and its compound patent in China (CN1231476C) has expired on June 6, 2021. As of now, only Shandong Weifang Runfeng Chemical Co., Ltd. has obtained the registration of 96% of the original drug of Bicyclopyrone. In China, the registration of its preparations is still blank. Manufacturers in need can try its compound products with Mesotrione, Isoxaflutole, Topramezone, and Tembotrione.

Market Expectation

Corn is the most important application crop of Bicyclopyrone, accounting for about 60% of its global market; Bicyclopyrone is the most used in the United States and Argentina, accounting for about 35% and 25% of its global market, respectively.

Bicyclopyrone has high efficiency, low toxicity, high crop safety, is not easy to produce drug resistance, and is safe and friendly to the environment. It is expected that the product will have a good market prospect in corn fields in the future.
